How to use a pigtail cable finder

A pigtail connector allows you to securely attach a cable finder transmitter to a wire, enabling accurate tracing and detection. Step 1: Prepare the WiresBefore connecting the pigtail, turn off power to the circuit for safety. Strip about ¾ inch of insulation from the end of the wire you want to trace and from the pigtail wire.

Ensure the wires are clean and free of frays to make a solid connection. Step 2: Connect the PigtailTwist the stripped end of the pigtail wire together with the stripped end of the target cable. If your pigtail has a terminal (such as a ring or spade), attach it to the transmitter input of your cable finder and secure it with a screw or clamp.

This ensures the signal from the transmitter is properly injected into the wire. Step 3: Set Up the Cable FinderTurn on the cable finder or wire tracer and select the appropriate mode (e.g., “TONE” for VDIAGTOOL V210). Adjust the sensitivity to a lower level initially, then increase as needed to detect the wire without interference.

The pigtail ensures a stable connection so the signal travels along the wire for accurate tracing. Step 4: Trace the CableUse the receiver probe to follow the wire path. Move the probe slowly along the suspected route.

The signal will increase as you approach the wire and decrease when moving away. The pigtail connection helps maintain a strong signal, especially for open circuits or long runs. Step 5: Verify and SecureOnce the wire is located, double-check the connection and ensure the pigtail is removed or insulated if it will remain in the circuit.

Test the circuit to confirm proper operation. Pigtails also provide stress relief, preventing damage to the wire during tracing. Using a pigtail with a cable finder is simple but essential for reliable detection, especially in automotive, network, or household wiring projects.

It ensures a secure connection, reduces signal loss, and protects the wire from damage.
