Optical Cable Level

Optical cable levels are measured in dBm, representing the power of light transmitted (TX) and received (RX) in a fiber optic link, with typical RX levels ranging from -1 to -10 dBm for short links and lower for longer runs.

Understanding Optical Power Levels

Optical power in fiber optics is expressed in dBm, a logarithmic unit relative to 1 milliwatt. Positive dBm values indicate power above 1 mW, while negative values indicate power below 1 mW. For example, -10 dBm corresponds to 0.

1 mW, and -20 dBm corresponds to 0. 01 mW. This logarithmic scale simplifies calculations of power loss and gain along the fiber link.

Transmit (TX) power is the light output from the source, while Receive (RX) power is the light detected at the far end.

Typical T

X power for short-range multimode transceivers is around -1 to -7 dBm, and RX power is usually -1 to -9. 9 dBm. Values below -14 dBm often indicate excessive loss or a fault in the fiber, such as dirty connectors, bad splices, or long outside plant runs.

Factors Affecting Optical Levels

Fiber Attenuation: Light intensity decreases as it travels through the fiber, measured in dB/km. Multimode fibers typically have 3 dB/km at 850 nm, while singlemode fibers have 0. 25–0.

4 dB/km at 1310–1550 nm. Connectors and Splices: Each connector introduces 0. 3–0.

75 dB loss, and splices add 0. 05–0. 3 dB.

Physical Impairments: Bends, microbends, or impurities in the fiber can cause additional loss through scattering or absorption.

Measuring Optical Levels

Optical power is measured using a power meter, optical loss test set (OLTS), or OTDR. Measurements can be unidirectional or bidirectional, and testing should be performed at the operational wavelength of the network (e.g., 850 nm for multimode VCSEL systems),. The measured RX power is compared against the transceiver's specified operating range to ensure the link is functioning correctly.

Practical Guidelines

Ensure R

X power is within the transceiver's acceptable range. Check for excessive loss if RX power is significantly lower than expected. Use proper cleaning and inspection of connectors to maintain signal integrity.

Consider the total link loss budget, including fiber length, splices, and connectors, to predict expected RX levels. By monitoring TX and RX optical levels, engineers can verify link performance, detect faults, and maintain reliable fiber optic communication.
