What are the energy levels of a diode laser

Diode lasers operate by electron transitions between conduction and valence bands, with energy levels controlled by band gaps and quasi-Fermi levels to achieve stimulated emission.

Energy Bands and Fermi Levels

A diode laser is a semiconductor device where electrons occupy discrete energy bands: the valence band (VB) and the conduction band (CB). The energy difference between these bands is the band gap (Eg), which determines the photon energy and thus the wavelength of the emitted light. In a p-type semiconductor, the Fermi level (EFP) is near the valence band, while in an n-type semiconductor, the Fermi level (EFN) is near the conduction band.

When a p-n junction is formed, electrons and holes recombine across the junction, creating photons.

Quasi-

Fermi Levels and Population InversionUnder forward bias, the quasi-Fermi levels for electrons and holes separate by an energy approximately equal to the applied voltage times the electron charge. Laser action occurs when this separation exceeds the band gap, creating a population inversion where more electrons occupy higher energy states in the conduction band than in the valence band. This condition allows stimulated emission to dominate over absorption, producing coherent light.

Photon Emission and Optical Gain

When an electron drops from the conduction band to the valence band, a photon is emitted with energy roughly equal to the band gap. The emitted photons can stimulate further recombination of electrons and holes, amplifying the light within the resonant cavity of the diode. The optical gain depends on the carrier density, which is controlled by the injection current and doping levels.

High doping and current levels increase the probability of stimulated emission, enabling lasing.

Summary

Conduction band (CB): higher energy level where electrons reside when excited. Valence band (VB): lower energy level filled with electrons at equilibrium. Band gap (Eg): energy difference between CB and VB, determines photon energy.

Fermi levels (EFP, EFN): indicate electron occupancy in p- and n-type regions.

Quasi-

Fermi levels: separated under bias to achieve population inversion. Stimulated emission: occurs when photon emission is amplified by population inversion, producing coherent laser light. Understanding these energy levels is crucial for designing diode lasers with specific wavelengths, optical power, and efficiency.
