Fiber Optic Broadband Access

Fiber optic broadband offers faster, more reliable internet than standard ADSL, with options ranging from part fibre (FTTC) to full fibre (FTTP) connections. What is Fibre Optic Broadband? Fibre optic broadband uses plastic or glass cables to transmit data as light signals, which allows for much faster and more efficient internet compared to traditional copper wires used in ADSL connections.

It is the most common form of broadband in the UK, with 98% of the population having access to speeds of at least 30Mbps, and 78% able to access full fibre (FTTP).

Types of Fibre Broadband

Part Fibre (FTTC – Fibre to the Cabinet): Fibre cables run from the exchange to a street cabinet, then copper wires connect to your home. This setup is widely available and offers faster speeds than ADSL, but can be affected by network congestion and distance from the cabinet. Full Fibre (FTTP – Fibre to the Premises): Fibre cables run directly to your home, providing 100% fibre connectivity.

Full fibre is more reliable, less prone to slowdowns during peak times, and supports higher speeds, often exceeding 1Gbps.

Speeds and Performance

Fibre broadband speeds vary depending on the type and provider. Part fibre typically offers speeds from 35Mbps to several hundred Mbps, while full fibre can reach 1Gbps or more. Full fibre connections are particularly beneficial for large households, online gaming, video streaming, and remote work, as they maintain stable speeds even during peak usage.

Providers and Availability

Most major UK providers, including BT, Virgin Media, Sky, EE, Plusnet, and Hyperoptic, offer fibre broadband packages. Hyperoptic, for example, provides 99. 9% reliable full fibre broadband in 64 towns and cities, with easy switching options and competitive deals.

Availability varies by location, and rural areas may have less coverage. You can check if full fibre is available at your address using tools like the Openreach Fibre Checker.

Benefits of Fibre Broadband

Faster download and upload speeds compared to ADSL or coaxial connections. More reliable and stable connection, less affected by congestion. Supports multiple devices and high-bandwidth activities simultaneously.

Future-proof technology, as internet demands continue to grow.

How to Get Fibre Broadband

Check availability at your postcode using provider websites or Openreach's fibre checker. Compare packages based on speed, price, and contract terms. Choose a provider and order installation.

Full fibre may require a short installation period if not already available. Fibre optic broadband is increasingly becoming the standard for UK homes, offering high-speed, reliable internet suitable for modern digital needs.
