OPGW Composite Optical Cable Structure

An OPGW cable consists of a central tubular structure containing optical fibers, surrounded by layers of steel and aluminum wires that provide mechanical strength, grounding, and lightning protection.

Core Structure

The central core of an OPGW cable contains one or more optical fibers housed in a stainless steel tube. This tube is often filled with a thixotropic or water-blocking gel to protect the fibers from moisture, mechanical stress, and environmental conditions during installation and operation. The optical fibers are typically single-mode, allowing long-distance, high-speed data transmission with low loss.

Protective Layers

Surrounding the central optical tube are layers of metal wires, which can include: Aluminum-clad steel wires: Provide tensile strength and mechanical support, often shaped trapezoidally around the core. Aluminum or aluminum alloy wires: Offer corrosion resistance and additional mechanical protection. These layers also serve as the grounding conductor, bonding towers to earth and shielding high-voltage lines from lightning strikes.

Construction TypesOPGW cables are generally constructed in two main types: Central Loose Tube Type: The optical fibers are loosely placed in a sealed stainless steel tube, allowing them to move slightly and reducing strain during temperature changes or mechanical stress.

Tight-

Buffered or Ribbon Fiber Designs: Some designs may use tightly buffered fibers or fiber ribbons within the tube for higher fiber counts and easier splicing.

Mechanical and Electrical Features

The stainless steel tube provides high tensile strength and resists twisting and lateral pressure. The outer metal layers protect the fibers from environmental damage, theft, and mechanical impact. The cable functions as both a ground wire and a communication medium, eliminating the need for separate optical cables along high-voltage transmission lines.

OPG

W cables are suitable for high-voltage lines above 35 kV, and they can integrate with WDM, SDH, or OTN systems for utility communication networks.

Summary

In essence, an OPGW cable is a composite structure combining: Optical fibers in a protective stainless steel tube for data transmission. Multiple layers of steel and aluminum wires for mechanical strength, grounding, and lightning protection. Water-blocking gel and hermetic sealing to ensure fiber integrity under harsh environmental conditions.

This design allows OPGW to serve dual purposes: reliable grounding for power lines and high-speed optical communication.

An optical ground wire (also known as an OPGW or, in the IEEE standard, an optical fiber composite overhead ground wire) is a type of cable that is used in overhead power lines. Such cable combines the functions of grounding and telecommunications. An OPGW cable contains a tubular structure with one or more optical fibers in it, surrounded by layers of steel and aluminum wire. The OPGW cable is run between the tops of high-voltage electricity pylons. The conductive part of the cable serves to bond adjacent tow
