How to connect the cable tray into the house via the stairwell

To route a cable tray through a stairwell, plan the path carefully, use appropriate supports like wall-mounted cantilever brackets or ceiling trapeze hangers, and secure tray sections with splice plates or mechanical fasteners to ensure safety and stability.

Planning the Route

Begin by reviewing the approved shop drawings to determine the tray layout, length, and location within the stairwell and house interior. Inspect the stairwell for obstructions such as pipes, HVAC ducts, or structural elements, and mark the path using a laser level or chalk line to ensure a straight and level route. Identify points where the tray will need bends, tees, or elevation changes to navigate the stairwell safely.

Selecting Support Methods

There are two common support options for stairwell installations: Wall-Mounted Cantilever Brackets: Attach L-shaped brackets to the stairwell walls at intervals (typically 1. 5–2 meters) using expansion bolts or anchors suitable for concrete or masonry. Ensure brackets are level and can support the tray weight.

Ceiling Trapeze Hangers: Suspend the tray from the ceiling using threaded rods and a horizontal Unistrut channel, creating a stable platform for the tray. This is useful if wall space is limited or uneven.

Installing the Tray

Measure and Cut: Cut tray sections to fit the stairwell dimensions, ensuring bends and risers are accounted for. Deburr all cut edges to prevent cable damage. Place and Secure: Lift tray sections onto the supports and secure them using splice plates, bolts, or clamps to join sections firmly.

Ensure connections are tight to prevent sagging or movement. Grounding: Attach grounding straps as required by electrical codes to maintain safety.

Navigating the Stairwell

Use angled or L-shaped fittings to follow the stairwell slope without sharp bends that could stress cables. Maintain consistent support spacing along vertical and horizontal runs to prevent tray deformation under load. Ensure clearance for headroom and fire safety according to local building codes.

Final Checks

Verify that the tray is level, secure, and aligned along the stairwell path. Confirm that all connections are tight and that the tray can support the expected cable load without sagging. Ensure compliance with local electrical codes regarding fill ratios, grounding, and support spacing.

By following these steps, you can safely and efficiently route a cable tray through a stairwell into a house, maintaining both structural integrity and electrical safety.
