PoE Power Supply Switch Standard

PoE switches use standardized power supplies defined by IEEE 802. 3af, 802. 3at, and 802.

3bt, delivering 15W, 30W, and up to 71W per port respectively.

Overview of Po

E Standards

Power over Ethernet (PoE) allows network devices to receive both data and electrical power through a single Ethernet cable, eliminating the need for separate power adapters and simplifying network installation. The main PoE standards are: IEEE 802. 3af (PoE): Provides up to 15.

4 watts per port, with 12. 95W guaranteed at the powered device (PD). Suitable for low-power devices like IP phones, basic wireless access points, and standard IP cameras.

IEE

E 802. 3at (PoE+): Delivers up to 30 watts per port, with 25W guaranteed at the PD. Ideal for higher-power devices such as PTZ cameras, Wi-Fi 6 access points, and video IP phones.

IEE

E 802. 3bt (PoE++ or 4PPoE): Supports Type 3 (up to 60W) and Type 4 (up to 100W) per port, enabling power-hungry devices like laptops, LED lighting, and industrial equipment.

Power Supply Components

A Po

E power supply system consists of: PSE (Power Sourcing Equipment): The switch or injector that provides power over Ethernet cables to connected devices.

P

D (Powered Device): The network device receiving power, such as IP cameras, VoIP phones, or wireless access points. Ethernet Cable: Typically Cat5e, Cat6, or higher, which carries both data and power. Maximum reliable transmission distance is 100 meters per standard.

Practical Considerations

Port Count and Total Power Budget: The switch's total power budget determines how many devices it can support simultaneously. For example, a 24-port PoE+ switch with a 370W budget can power all ports at full 30W, or more devices at lower wattage. Device Compatibility: Ensure the switch standard matches the power requirements of connected devices.

Low-power devices can use 802. 3af, while high-power devices require 802. 3at or 802.

3bt. Voltage and Current: PoE standards operate at 44–57V DC, with current varying by standard and device requirements.

Summary

Choosing the right PoE switch depends on the power requirements of your network devices, the number of devices, and the total power budget of the switch.

IEE

E 802. 3af is sufficient for basic devices, 802. 3at supports medium-power devices, and 802.

3bt is necessary for high-power or industrial applications. Proper planning ensures reliable power delivery and network stability.
