External power meter connected to the distribution box

An external power meter can be connected to a distribution box using proper wiring, auxiliary power supply if needed, and adherence to safety and regulatory standards.

Overview

External or auxiliary-powered meters allow the meter to operate independently of the main supply, ensuring accurate energy measurement even during power interruptions. This setup is particularly useful for communicating meters or installations where space is limited and a separate power source is available.

Wiring and Connection

Safety First: Always ensure the main power supply is turned off before starting any installation. Use insulated tools, voltage testers, and follow local electrical codes. Meter Placement: The meter should be installed in a dedicated meter enclosure or distribution box.

Only intake and metering equipment should occupy this space; additional devices may violate regulations and cause operational issues. Connection to Distribution Box: Line conductors from the utility feed enter the top of the enclosure and connect to the meter's input terminals. Neutral and ground conductors are routed to their respective bus bars, maintaining separation to prevent faults.

Branch circuits connect to breakers downstream of the meter, ensuring proper load distribution. Auxiliary Power Supply: If the meter requires external power, connect it to a dedicated auxiliary port. This ensures the meter functions even if the main supply is interrupted, but precautions must be taken to prevent tampering.

Regulatory and Practical Considerations

Only equipment associated with metering and intake should be installed in the meter enclosure. Unauthorized devices may need to be removed at the customer's expense. Ensure proper labeling of breakers and adherence to color coding: black/red for hot, white for neutral, green/bare for ground.

For 240V circuits, use double-pole breakers; for standard lighting/outlet circuits, single-pole breakers rated 15–20A are typical.

Testing and Commissioning

After installation: Verify all connections are secure and correctly polarized. Test the meter operation with the auxiliary power supply if used. Confirm that the distribution box and downstream circuits are functioning safely and efficiently.

By following these steps, an external power meter can be safely and effectively integrated with a distribution box, ensuring reliable energy measurement and compliance with safety standards.
