Disassembly of the control panel of the distribution box

Disassembling a distribution box panel requires careful preparation, strict adherence to safety protocols, and systematic removal of components such as circuit breakers, busbars, and panel sections.

Safety Precautions

Before starting, ensure the main power supply is completely turned off and verify with a voltage tester that all circuits are de-energized. Wear protective gloves, goggles, and insulated tools to prevent electric shock. Only authorized personnel should perform disassembly, and the work area should be dry, clean, and free from water or heat sources.

Step-by-

Step DisassemblyPreparationInspect the panel for physical damage or missing components. Gather necessary tools: screwdrivers, pliers, torque wrench, and lifting equipment if needed. If the panel is large, plan for sectional disassembly using cranes, forklifts, or rollers.

Remove Circuit Breakers

Identify and label each circuit breaker for easy reinstallation. For plug-in breakers, carefully pull them out from the busbar retaining clips. For bolt-on breakers, unscrew the mounting bolts before removal.

Disconnect Busbars and Wiring

Loosen and remove busbar jointing fishplates and associated nuts and bolts. Carefully disconnect all incoming and outgoing feeder cables and control wiring, labeling each connection for future reference.

Separate Panel Sections

Panels are often divided into vertical transport sections. Loosen the nuts and bolts connecting sections, ensuring rubber gaskets remain in place to protect against dust and moisture. Lift sections using eyebolts or mechanical lifting devices, keeping panels upright and avoiding stacking.

Temporary Storage

Store panels in a clean, dry, and ventilated environment. Cover with plastic sheets if stored outdoors for less than two weeks. Avoid placing panels directly on the ground; use pallets or base planks.

Additional Considerations

Check all busbar and wiring connections for looseness before and after disassembly. Follow local electrical codes and NFPA standards for safety compliance. Modern panels may include RCDs, RCBOs, or electronic monitoring devices, which should be handled carefully to avoid damage.

By following these steps and precautions, the distribution box panel can be safely disassembled for maintenance, transport, or replacement while minimizing the risk of electrical hazards and component damage.
