Applications of optical fiber in sensing

Optical fiber sensing is widely used for monitoring physical, chemical, and biomedical parameters in real-time across industrial, structural, environmental, and healthcare applications.

Structural and Industrial Monitoring

Optical fiber sensors are extensively used for structural health monitoring of bridges, buildings, pipelines, and aircraft. They can detect strain, stress, vibration, and temperature changes, providing early warnings of potential failures or damage, which enhances safety and reduces maintenance costs. Distributed sensing technologies, such as Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS), Distributed Temperature and Strain Sensing (DTSS), and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), allow thousands of sensing points along a single fiber, enabling continuous monitoring over long distances.

Environmental and Hazardous Applications

Due to their immunity to electromagnetic interference and non-conductive nature, optical fiber sensors are ideal for hazardous environments with high voltage, flammable materials, or extreme temperatures. They are used in oil and gas pipelines, chemical plants, and nuclear facilities to monitor temperature, pressure, and chemical composition safely. Their resistance to chemical and biological agents also allows deployment in harsh industrial conditions.

Telecommunications and Infrastructure

Optical fibers can monitor telecommunication cables for excessive strain or temperature changes, preventing damage and service interruptions. They also serve as hydrophones for seismic and sonar applications, enabling detection of underwater vibrations and acoustic signals.

Biomedical and Health Monitoring

In healthcare, optical fiber sensors are applied to measure oxygen, carbon dioxide, proteins, and other biomolecules, as well as to monitor physiological parameters in wearable devices. Their small size and flexibility make them suitable for minimally invasive medical applications.

Chemical and Process Monitoring

Optical fiber sensors can detect pH, ammonia, detergents, pesticides, and humidity, making them valuable in environmental monitoring, food safety, and industrial process control. They can provide real-time feedback for automated systems, improving efficiency and safety.

Advantages Supporting Applications

The versatility of optical fiber sensing comes from its small size, lightweight, long-distance signal transmission, and multiplexing capability, allowing multiple sensors along a single fiber without active electronics at the sensing points. This makes them highly suitable for distributed sensing networks in both remote and complex environments. In summary, optical fiber sensing is a multi-functional technology applied in structural monitoring, industrial safety, environmental sensing, telecommunications, biomedical monitoring, and chemical detection, offering real-time, reliable, and safe measurements in diverse and challenging conditions.
