Current rating of household electrical distribution box

Most modern household electrical distribution boxes are rated between 100 and 200 amps, with 200 amps being the standard for new homes. The rating of a household electrical distribution box, also called a breaker box or service panel, indicates the maximum electrical current it can safely handle at one time, measured in amperes (amps). This rating is typically printed on the main circuit breaker, which is the largest switch in the panel and controls power to the entire home.

Common residential ratings include 60A, 100A, 150A, 200A, and occasionally 300–400A for larger or newer homes. 60A panels are considered outdated and often insufficient for modern electrical needs. 100A panels are common in older or smaller homes and are generally the minimum acceptable capacity today.

150A panels serve moderate electrical demands. 200A panels are the standard for most new homes, providing ample capacity for multiple high-wattage appliances, central air conditioning, and electric vehicle chargers. 300–400A panels may be installed in very large homes or homes with extensive electrical requirements.

To determine your home's panel rating, you can safely check the main breaker handle, which will display a number followed by “A” (e.g., 100A or 200A). This rating is distinct from the smaller branch circuit breakers, which typically range from 15A to 20A and protect individual circuits. Understanding your panel's rating is crucial for planning upgrades or adding high-demand appliances, as exceeding the panel's capacity can cause frequent breaker trips, overheating, or fire hazards.

If you are unsure of your panel's rating or considering an upgrade, a licensed electrician can perform a load calculation to ensure your system safely meets current and future electrical needs.
