How to connect fiber optic cold fusion connectors

A fiber optic cold fusion connector, also called a mechanical splice or fast connector, terminates optical fibers without heat, using mechanical alignment for quick, cost-effective connections.

Overview

A fiber optic cold fusion connector is a field-installable connector that allows optical fibers to be connected without a fusion splicer. Instead of using heat to join fibers, it relies on mechanical alignment or index-matching gel to align the bare fiber with a short fiber stub inside the connector body, enabling optical signal transmission. These connectors are widely used in FTTH (Fiber to the Home) deployments, emergency repairs, and small-scale installations where speed and flexibility are critical.

TypesSC/APC Cold Connectors: Feature an 8-degree angled endface polish, providing return loss ≥60dB, ideal for GPON, EPON, and CATV networks. The green housing follows industry-standard color coding for APC connectors. SC/UPC Cold Connectors: Use ultra-physical contact polish with return loss ≥50dB, suitable for general-purpose fiber connections.

AdvantagesCost-effective: Requires less expensive equipment and minimal specialized training compared to fusion splicing. Quick installation: Can be installed in seconds, much faster than fusion splicing. Flexible: Can be used in remote or hard-to-access locations without specialized tools.

No power required: Ideal for field installations where electricity may not be available.

Disadvantages

Slightly higher insertion loss compared to fusion splicing. May be less durable in harsh environmental conditions if not properly protected.

Applications

Terminating drop cables at customer premises. Patching within distribution boxes. Quick restoration of fiber networks.

High-density data center connections using mechanical splice adapters.

Installation Considerations

Ensure the fiber ends are clean and properly cleaved. Align the fiber carefully with the internal stub using the mechanical clamp or gel. Test the connection for insertion loss and return loss to ensure network performance.

Fiber optic cold fusion connectors provide a fast, reliable, and cost-efficient solution for field fiber terminations, especially in FTTH and emergency repair scenarios, while maintaining acceptable optical performance for modern PON and CATV networks.
