Fiber Optic Cable Under Well Tube

Downhole fiber optic cables are specially designed to be installed under or along well tubing, providing reliable sensing and communication in harsh subsurface environments.

Downhole Fiber Optic Cable Design

Fiber optic cables used under well tubes are engineered for extreme conditions, including high pressure, elevated temperatures, and corrosive fluids. A common design is the tube-in-tube configuration, where optical fibers are housed in a hermetically sealed metal tube (stainless steel or INCONEL®) filled with protective gels to prevent microbending and chemical ingress. This inner tube is supported by a polymer layer for mechanical buffering, while the outer tube provides primary pressure resistance and mechanical shielding.

Additional encapsulation or armor layers can be added for enhanced protection during deployment and operation.

Installation Methods

Downhole fiber optic cables can be cemented behind the casing or strapped to the production tubing, depending on well design and monitoring requirements. These cables are used for distributed sensing applications such as temperature (DTS), acoustic (DAS), and strain (DSS) monitoring, providing continuous or intermittent data along the wellbore. Proper installation ensures the fibers remain strain-free, minimizing optical degradation or breakage over the well's operational life.

Environmental and Operational Considerations

Temperature and Pressure: Standard fibers can withstand up to 175°C, while high-temperature versions tolerate up to 300°C, suitable for thermal recovery operations like SAGD. Chemical Resistance: Fibers are designed to resist hydrogen and other corrosive substances present in heavy oil or geothermal wells. Mechanical Protection: Controlled prestressing during fabrication ensures fibers remain strain-free, and outer encapsulation protects against abrasion and mechanical shock during deployment.

Surface and Underground Conduit Considerations

If the fiber optic cable transitions from the well to surface infrastructure, it may be routed through underground conduits for protection. Typical conduit burial depths range from 18–48 inches, depending on soil type, traffic, and local regulations. Conduits can be PVC or HDPE, sometimes with inner ducts to facilitate cable pulling.

Protective measures such as armored cables, bend radius control, and conductive warning tapes are recommended to prevent damage from excavation or environmental stress.

Summary

Installing fiber optic cables under well tubes requires specialized downhole-rated cables with robust mechanical, thermal, and chemical protection. Proper installation—either cemented behind casing or strapped to tubing—ensures reliable long-term monitoring for temperature, acoustic, and strain measurements. When transitioning to surface infrastructure, using conduits and adhering to burial depth and protection standards enhances durability and operational safety.
