How to handle optical cable coiling

Proper optical cable coiling requires careful attention to bend radius, tension, and neat layout to prevent fiber damage and maintain signal integrity.

Key Principles for Coiling Optical Cables

Maintain Minimum Bend Radius: Optical fibers are fragile and can break or suffer increased attenuation if bent too sharply. Always follow the manufacturer's specified minimum bend radius for the cable type, whether tight-buffered, loose-tube, or micro-tube designs. Control Tension: Avoid excessive pulling or twisting.

For outside plant cables, tension should generally not exceed 600 lbs, and capstans or pullers should be calibrated to prevent over-tensioning. Unequal tension can cause cable “squirting” or internal damage. Avoid Twists and Kinks: Keep the cable straight and aligned with any printed markings to minimize twists.

Work out any twists before coiling, especially for preferential bend cables with internal strength members. Neat and Organized Coiling: After splicing, coil fibers carefully in splice trays or enclosures. Methods include coiling from the middle outward or from one end, ensuring heat-shrink sleeves are fixed and fibers are not overlapping or forming “bird's nests”.

Proper coiling facilitates future maintenance and prevents fiber breakage. Reserved Length and Splice Protection: Calculate and reserve sufficient fiber length before splicing. Place heat-shrink sleeves or protective tubes in the fixing grooves to protect splices and maintain a tidy layout.

Storage Practices: Store reels upright on firm surfaces, chocked to prevent rolling, and avoid laying reels on their sides. Protect from environmental exposure, moisture, and pests. Re-tighten flange bolts and inspect reels before use.

Safety Precautions: Never look directly into fiber ends, and handle cut fibers carefully to avoid injury from glass shards. Work in well-ventilated areas and follow chemical safety guidelines when using adhesives or cleaning agents.

Step-by-

Step Coiling After SplicingPre-process fibers: Open the cable and pigtail, and calculate reserved lengths. Splice fibers: Complete splicing with proper alignment and heat-shrink protection. Coil fibers: Use one of the recommended methods—middle-outward or end-to-end—avoiding sharp bends.

Fix fibers in trays: Secure heat-shrink sleeves and remaining fibers in the splice tray grooves. Inspect layout: Ensure fibers are neat, untwisted, and within bend radius limits. By following these practices, optical fibers remain protected, signal loss is minimized, and future maintenance is simplified.

Hold the cable in one hand. Use your other hand to form a loop in the natural direction of the cable. This is the “over” loop — just a regular coil. For the next loop, twist your wrist slightly so the cable flips.

Fiber Optics handling

When pulling up the cable, make sure that it has no contact with sharp surfaces. This can damage the jacket and the fiber optics inside. During this process, the bending radius must be respected. In
