How are fiber optic patch cords and pigtails made

Fiber optic patch cords and pigtails are manufactured through a precise sequence of cutting, stripping, connector assembly, curing, polishing, and testing to ensure high-quality optical performance.

Materials and Tools Preparation

The production begins with selecting the appropriate fiber type (single-mode or multi-mode), connectors (SC, LC, ST, FC, MTP), and jacket material (PVC, LSZH) based on application requirements. Essential tools include fiber strippers, cutting machines, epoxy, curing ovens, polishing machines, ultrasonic cleaners, and microscopes. Fiber cables are typically supplied on reels and must be cut to the required lengths using automated or manual cutting machines for accuracy.

Cutting and Stripping

Cables are cut according to order specifications, with a small reserved length to accommodate connector assembly. The outer jacket is removed using a jacket stripper, and the tight-buffered inner coating (0. 9 mm) is stripped with a fiber miller stripper.

The fiber is then cleaned with alcohol to remove dust and residues, ensuring a contaminant-free surface for connector insertion.

Connector Assembly and Curing

Epoxy is injected into the connector ferrule, and the cleaned fiber is carefully inserted. The assembly is cured in a vertical or horizontal solidification furnace to secure the fiber within the connector. For duplex or multi-fiber cords, fibers are identified and arranged properly before assembly.

Strain relief boots and connector housings are then attached to protect the fiber and maintain mechanical stability.

Polishing and Inspection

The ferrule end-face is polished using automatic polishing machines to ensure the fiber core aligns precisely with the ferrule. Polished connectors are cleaned with ultrasonic equipment and inspected under a 400x or 600x microscope to detect scratches, contamination, or misalignment.

Testing and Quality Control

Each patch cord undergoes insertion loss (IL) and return loss (RL) testing using calibrated equipment to verify optical performance. MPO/MTP patch cords may require additional specialized testing. This ensures that the final product meets international standards and provides reliable, low-loss connectivity in fiber optic networks.

Summary

The production of fiber optic patch cords and pigtails is a highly controlled process involving precise cutting, stripping, connector assembly, curing, polishing, and rigorous testing. Proper execution of each step ensures low insertion loss, high return loss, and durable connectors, which are critical for high-speed data transmission and network reliability.
