Set the optical module alarm threshold

Optical module alarm thresholds can be configured to monitor transmit/receive power, temperature, voltage, and bias current, with both warning and alarm levels to ensure proper operation.

Understanding Alarm Thresholds

Optical modules typically have default vendor-defined alarm thresholds for parameters such as transmit power, receive power, temperature, and supply voltage. These thresholds trigger alarms when the actual values exceed safe operating ranges. There are usually two levels of alarms: Warning: Indicates a minor deviation from the threshold; the module may still operate normally.

Alarm: Indicates a significant deviation, suggesting potential module or fiber issues. Some systems allow alarm standardization, where a unified threshold is applied based on transmission distance and bandwidth, overriding vendor defaults to meet user requirements.

Configuring Alarm Thresholds

Huawei Devices

Enable Alarm Standardization: This ensures a unified threshold is used instead of vendor-defined values. The system calculates thresholds based on module distance and bandwidth. Set Upper and Lower Thresholds: Commands allow you to configure maximum and minimum values for transmit and receive power.

For example, you can enable the transmit power alarm on a specific port and define the thresholds. Commit Configuration: After setting thresholds, commit the configuration to activate the alarm monitoring. Optional Warning Control: You can disable warning detection if only critical alarms are needed.

Core Switches (SFF-8472 DDM)Monitor Transceiver Status: Use the transceiver-monitor command to check parameters like temperature, TX/RX power, and laser bias current. Set Thresholds: Use the transceiver-threshold command to define when alarms or warnings are triggered.

Enable SNM

P Traps: Configure the SNMP server to receive notifications when thresholds are exceeded.

FP

D Upgrade: Ensure the module firmware is up to date to support the latest alarm features.

Best Practices

Use certified modules: Non-certified modules may provide inaccurate diagnostic information. Check fiber connections: When an alarm is triggered, inspect the optical module and connected fibers first. Avoid unnecessary changes: Default thresholds are tested values; only adjust thresholds if operational requirements demand it.

Monitor continuously: Regularly check module parameters to prevent unexpected failures. By following these steps, you can effectively configure and manage optical module alarm thresholds to maintain network reliability and prevent service disruptions.

Enabling the Optical Module Alarm Threshold Standardization Function

The device has two types of optical module power alarms: warning and alarm. A warning is reported when the difference between the actual power and vendor-defined threshold is not great.

Setting Optical Power Alarm Thresholds

You can set optical power alarm so that the device generates alarms if the transmit or receive power of an optical module exceeds a threshold. An alarm may indicate that the optical module is faulty.
